Beth Orton Finally Got Back To Me
AFTER 6-YEAR ABSENCE BETH ORTON SINGS ‘MAGPIE’ ON DAVID LETTERMAN
She’s back! I became obsessed with Beth Orton back in the day when she sang ‘She Cries Your Name’ to me on her debut album, ‘Trailer Park’. Then came brilliant record after brilliant record. Central Reservation, Daybreaker, Comfort of Strangers—all stuff I obsessed over, played on repeat for hours. Then she up and left me.
More inside.
It’s been 6 years since I’ve heard from her, but I’m fine with it, I guess. She has a good excuse—she had a kid. And even though I’m no fan of the brats, I suppose a woman’s place is in the home. Ha! Just seeing if you’re still reading.
Anyway, she sang her new single ‘Magpie’, from her upcoming album ‘The Sugaring Season’ on Letterman the other night. I’m in. Oh, and by the way, Magpie is a name that I’ve always set aside to use for when I open a shop or something. She’s testing me, but I called it years ago. I’ll let her use it for a song title, but if you see her trying to set up shop under that name, let me know. She’ll probably try and start selling clothes for brats or something.
‘Sugaring Season’ comes out on October 1st in the UK and October 2nd in the US.

“sweetest decline” is one of my favorite songs. her cover of “buckets of rain” with m. ward is lovely. “pass in time” is another great duet (with terry callier, although i always think it’s richard thompson.)
i didn’t know she had a new studio album coming out, so thanks for the awesome news!
omg, yes! ‘sweetest decline’ is amazing. ‘central reservation’ is a great record. i’ll have to check out ‘buckets of rain’!
