Barbara Kruger: You Want It, You Buy It, You Forget It
BARBARA KRUGER CONTINUES HER BOLD WORD PLAY AT HIRSHHORN MUSEUM, WASHINGTON DC
If you’re worried you’ll miss Barbara Kruger’s new installation ‘Belief + Doubt’ at the Hirshhorn, you shouldn’t—it runs through August 27, 2015. So you have plenty of time to make your way over to DC.
It looks to be pretty cool too. It’s a continuation of her ‘fill the whole space’ aesthetic that she’s been working with for the past 20 years. The entire lower level of the museum (the gift shop has been temporarily moved) has been covered with giant decals where “words either crafted by the artist or borrowed from the popular lexicon address conflicting perceptions of democracy, power, and belief.”
Kruger tells the museum that she is “interested in introducing doubt.” Some areas of the installation focus on open-ended questions like “WHO IS BEYOND THE LAW? WHO IS FREE TO CHOOSE? WHO SPEAKS? WHO IS SILENT?” While other sections focus on issues like desire and consumption.
The above video shows a cool time-lapse recording of the installation of the show. For a couple more pics, jump in.
