Jean-Paul Gaultier Pays Tribute To Boy George, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, And More

Karlie Kloss As Boy George

In Jean-Paul Gaultier’s clever Spring 2013 Runway ready-to-wear show in Paris, the designer paid tribute to the stars of the 80s who’ve inspired fashion. Model Karlie Kloss was Boy George, Joan Smalls was Sade, and Jessica Stam was Madonna! There was also David Bowie, Grace Jones, Annie Lennox, and Jane Birkin, among others.

While the theme was 80s celebrities, the looks had definite nods to iconic pieces from Gaultier’s 90s shows. I loved the reinterpretation of the ‘invisible jackets’ that were used for ‘Keep It Together’ during Madonna’s ‘Blond Ambition’ tour.

Gaultier said the show was about, “people who had an influence on fashion, just as I was personally influenced by David Bowie in his way of being and dressing.” He said of Madonna, “[she] was the post-feminist, what came after the bra-burning years. She said ‘Yes, I am going to dress sexy, but I am the one deciding to do it’.”
