Perfume Genius (aka Mike Hadreas) reminds me of art school. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. He’d have been the coolest kid at my art school. His work is raw, low budget, deeply personal, and simple, but deep with emotional meaning. This annoys some people. My friend Jason saw him in Portland and was gagging through the performance. I think he felt it was too precious, too emotive, too fay. And he’d be right. But, for some reason this all works for me. I think it’s Hadreas’ sincerity that shines through all of it for me. I think he’s putting himself out there—as naked as possible—and that’s pretty ballsy. Especially in pumps.

‘Take Me Home’ is the latest video from ‘Put Your Back N 2 it’, a lovely album (dark and sad). The video is directed by Patrick Sher. Mike told Pitchfork that the clip was filmed in an area of Seattle that he used to hang around a few years ago. When he was walking around like a hooker, the truck drivers kept whistling at him, which is, of course—a complement. He also mentioned that initially he wanted to eat a hot dog off the ground (instead of a twinkie), but the little store didn’t sell hot dogs. He came up with the twinkie substitute on the fly to illustrate one’s need to fill a void, via binge-eating. We’ve all been there, girl.
