M.I.A. For Kenzo
Kenzo’s new runway show for Fall 2013 was influenced by temples, India, China, and Nepal. So, naturally, they had M.I.A. create the music for the show.
Check out her exlcusive mixtape after the jump.
Oh, and there’s some more looks from Kenzo too. I think I hear Kid Cudi in the mix as well.
[more]Hear It Now: New M.I.A. Track, ‘Doobie’!
Producer Danja shares a previously unreleased M.I.A. track with the world!
‘Doobie’ takes us back to classic M.I.A. Even though it was recorded a couple years ago along with ‘Bad Girls’, her raps sound more like they did on her debut, ‘Arular’. And that’s not a bad thing. Oh, and by the way, I never knew this, but Danja is a total cutie-pie! Watch this clip of him driving around L.A. while he introduces the track. He says he ‘put the drums though an arpeggiator’. Now, I have no idea what that means, but he can come over my house and explain it to me anyday.
It isn’t clear if ‘Doobie’ will be featured on her upcoming album, ‘Matangi’ (April 15). But, I’d certainly welcome its inclusion.
Watch and listen after the jump.
[more]Girls vs. Boyz
Santigold is helping Lena Dunham bring a little flavor to her fabulous HBO show ‘Girls’. A few weeks ago, we got our first listen of the new Santi track for the ‘Girls’ season 2 soundtrack titled—what else—‘Girls’.
Now we have the video. It’s a fun collage of all different types of girls dancing around. Not that Santigold needs anymore comparisons to fellow artist M.I.A., but I am reminded of the latter’s song, ‘Boyz’. They’re two great, two totally different tracks, but hey, the titles and video structure (‘Boyz’ is a bunch of boys dancing around) are just begging for comparison, no?
Check out the video for ‘Boyz’ after the jump and tell us which song you prefer.
[more]M.I.A.’s New Album Delayed For Being ‘Too Positive’
SRI LANKAN BORN RAPPER’S FOURTH ALBUM ‘MATANGI’ WILL NOW BE RELEASED ON APRIL 15th
As a default, I take news like this as bad. Whenever a record label tells an artist to go back and tweak a record to their liking, it’s never a good thing. According to M.I.A., she was told by Interscope Records that her upcoming fourth album, ‘Matangi’ was “too positive” and that she should “darken it up a bit”. Ugh. How about you trust that’s SHE’S the artist and she knows what she’s doing? AKA, tell Jimmy Iovine to suck it. As if her music needs to fit into their marketed image of her.
Rolling Stone quotes the artist as saying, “I thought I’d finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago. It’s like ‘We just built you up as the public enemy No. 1 and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff.”
The delicious part? It’s M.I.A., sillies! When asked how she planned on responding to Interscope’s feedback, she replied, “I’m taking my time to decide what they mean.”
Now the album will come out on April 15th, which interestingly aligns with the Tamil New Year. I suggest she doesn’t change a thing, tell the label she did, and then hand it back in—right at the last minute. They’ll be like, “Much better! Thanks!” Sometimes people just need to tell you what to do, it makes them feel better, more involved—even if you never heed their advice. We all win!
